Every inch of a DTF gang sheet costs the same, whether it is covered in ink or left empty. A smart layout fits more designs on the same sheet, which lowers your cost per transfer without changing anything else. Here is how print shops plan layouts for maximum profit.
Start with the biggest designs
Place large designs first, then fill the gaps. Two 10" adult fronts fit side by side on a 22" sheet with room to spare. A single 11–12" design leaves about 9–10" next to it, which is perfect for youth designs or a column of left chest logos.
Mix sizes in the same row
| Main design | Space left in the row | Fill with |
|---|---|---|
| One 12" front | about 9" | One 8" youth design, or two 4" pocket logos side by side |
| One 11" front | about 10" | Two 4" logos plus sleeve prints |
| Two 10" fronts | about 1" | Nothing; move small designs to the next row |
Rotate designs
A tall design (for example 6" wide and 10" tall) turned sideways may fit in a row where it would not fit upright. Rotation does not change how it presses; you just turn the transfer back before pressing.
Nest irregular shapes
Round logos, triangles and script lettering have empty corners. Offset them so one design's corner tucks into the next design's empty space, keeping at least 0.25" between them. Read the spacing guide before you nest tightly.
Fill every gap with small extras
Neck labels, sleeve logos, hat patches and koozie designs are perfect gap fillers. Many shops keep a library of small "filler" designs, like their own logo or best-selling pocket prints, and drop them into every leftover space. Those transfers are almost free because you were paying for that film anyway.
Plan by rows for easy cutting
Straight horizontal rows let you cut the sheet into strips with one long cut, then trim each strip. That saves real time on a 120" or 240" sheet. Keep designs that go together (one customer's order, one size) in the same row.
Choose the right sheet length
Lay out your designs first, then order the shortest length that fits. If you are a few inches over a length, either tighten the layout or add more filler designs so the extra length is not wasted. Longer sheets also lower the price per inch; compare lengths in our gang sheet price list.
A worked example
An order of 10 adult shirts (11" front) and 10 youth shirts (8" front):
- Each row holds one 11" adult design and one 8" youth design side by side (19" plus spacing).
- Ten rows at about 11.5" each need about 115" of length.
- Order a 22" × 120" sheet ($66.00): about $3.30 per shirt. The last 5" of the sheet still has room for five small 3.5" logos at no extra cost.

Let the builder do it
If you do not use design software, our online gang sheet builder lets you drop in logos, set sizes and auto-fill the sheet, then order in a few minutes.
FAQ
Can I put different customers' orders on one sheet?
Yes. Many shops batch several orders onto one long sheet to get a lower price per inch. Group each order in its own rows.
Does rotating a design affect print quality?
No. Print quality is the same in any orientation.
